GALESBURG, MI- Youth soccer teams from across the Midwest and Canada are competing at the River Oaks Soccer Complex in Galesburg for the 2014 Super Y League Midwest Regional Weekend.

The three-day competition began Friday and ends Sunday.

More than 1,500 participants range from U-12 to U-17 are playing a total of 63 games. The winners will advance to the national tournament in Florida in December.

Chris Keenan, the owner of Kalamazoo Kingdom Soccer, said he worked with Discover Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County Parks to put in a bid for hosting the tournament.

"Local business make a lot of money and a lot of friends from Cleveland to Milwaukee to Toronto," Keenan said.

"This tournament also showcases West Michigan. I love West Michigan," Keenan said.  "A lot of people probably have never stopped in Kalamazoo, but this could make them fall in love with Kalamazoo."

Cacho Cordova, director of coaching of Mequon United, a team from southeast Wisconsin, said the facility here is "beautiful."

"When you find facility like this, we love it," he said.

Arturo Navejas and his wife Martha drove to Kalamazoo from Chicago to support their daughter, Gaby, 16, who plays as a goalkeeper for the Chicago Inferno.

"There are lot of fields here, and they are all in good condition," he said.
